New props tested

Regional Air Express completes flight testing

Regional Air Express, based at airport Münster/Osnabrück in Germany, has successfully completed the test flights with the new five bladed propellers of MT-Propeller in Straubing, Germany. MT-Propeller developed these propellers consisting of composite materials instead of aluminium.

During these trials the performance data and noise emission were determined. The noise emission outside the aircraft is so low that it will be listed in the lowest noise category. Inside the cabin the Metro is more gentle with its 88 db(A) than a Boeing 747 with its 92 db(A).
The performance is even better than with the old four bladed propellers and the maintenance costs are much lower due to the new materials. A significant reduction of vibration inside the cabin now delivers jet comfort with its new five bladed propellers.

The EASA certification is planned for February 2009.

Regional Air Express launched this project together with MT-Propeller and will be the first operator of the Metro who will convert the whole fleet of four aircraft to the new five bladed propellers during the first quarter of 2009. Regional Air Express will then be the carrier with the most gentle 19 seat turboprop in the worldwide executive charter and wet-lease market.

Five-blade Propeller

Regional Air Express cooperates with MT-Propeller

Regional Air Express, based at the Airport Münster-Osnabrück cooperates with the company MT-Propeller, domiciled in Straubingen. The company, specialised in innovative technologies regarding the construction of propellers, has developed a new five blade prop for the Honeywell TPE Turboprop, formerly known as Garett.

In order to certify this new Propeller for the aircraft type Swearingen Metroliner, tests are still to begin in 2008. Regional Air Express will provide an aircraft of this type for the tests and the certification programme. After granted admission, Regional Air Express, as the first airline worldwide, will outfit all four of their Fairchild Swearingen Metroliner with the new five-blade prop.

At the time about 350 Fairchild Swearingen Metroliner are operated worldwide by passenger- and freight airlines. Many of them have already indicated their interest in a conversion.

The new five-blade propeller is made out of light composite material, not out of aluminium.
The hereby achieved reduction of mass leads to an increase in performance while relieving the engine accessories.

From a passengers point of view the main advantage is the reduction of the cabin noise by 50 %. This effect can only be reached because of the additional fifth propeller blade resulting into a reduction of the propellers diameter, which consequently then has a greater distance to the cabin.

In addition the new propellers require less maintenance. Due to the fact that they are made out of composite material, corrosion does not play a role anymore. Furthermore, the lifetime, compared to an aluminium propeller, is unlimited.

Regional Air Express therefore leads the way and will then have the most silent 19 seater available on the market.

Regional Air Express expandiert

NewEU rules for handluggage at EU airports

New EU regulation 1546/2006

Changes for travellers:
new rules for hand luggage at all EU airports

New rules on what is permitted in hand luggage will take effect on 6 November 2006. Liquids, gels and aerosols are only allowed in hand luggage in small quantities (no more than 100 ml per item) and if correctly packaged. These rules will apply to all passengers departing from or changing planes at EU airports.

The new rules cover liquids such as water and other beverages, gels, pastes, lotions and the contents of aerosol cans. Toiletries such as toothpaste, shaving cream, hair gel, lip gloss and creams also fall under the rules.

These are the rules for liquids in your hand luggage:
1. You can only take liquids and gels in containers of no more than 100 millilitres on board the aircraft.
2. These containers must be carried in transparent plastic bags.
3. There is a limit of one transparent plastic bag per person.
4. The volume of the transparent plastic bag may not be greater than 1 litre.
5. The transparent plastic bag must be re-sealable.

You may bring a suitable plastic bag from home. During the introductory period, free transparent plastic bags will also be given out at all airports.

There are two exceptions to the above rules:
a. Baby food needed during the flight;
b. Medicines needed during the flight.

Shopping at airports and on board the flight
You can still make purchases, including duty-free purchases, after ticket and/or passport control and on board European airline flights. Liquids and gels that you buy after ticket and/or passport control or on board will be packed and sealed for you as necessary by the shop or cabin personnel. The seal is valid for one day. If you must change planes, you may not break the seal until you reach your final destination.

Keep your liquids separate
When passing through the security check for hand luggage, you must place your liquids separately in the bin for X-ray screening. Your containers of liquids must fit comfortably in the transparent plastic bag, and the bag must be closed. Coats, jackets and large electrical appliances such as laptops must also be handed in separately to be checked.

Regional Air Express goes FMO !
